Nirrin - Senior Field Application Scientist

Billerica, MA
Full Time
Mid Level

About Nirrin

Nirrin is at the forefront of developing sensors and analytics to enable the next generation of biological manufacturing. We are dedicated to transforming the way bioprocessing is conducted by providing real-time, reliable measurements of critical bioprocess parameters using near-infrared spectroscopy.
Our small but passionate team is focused on integrating novel near-infrared sensors with other data sources to enable the next generation of biopharma manufacturing. We provide customer focused innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the biopharma industry as a whole. At Nirrin, we believe in fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment where our team can thrive and make a meaningful impact.

Role Summary

Nirrin's commercial momentum is growing quickly, and customer evaluations are where those opportunities are won. The Senior Field Application Scientist is the technical lead for that work: running demonstrations and experiments with customers at their sites, preparing for them in our Billerica lab, and making sure every evaluation runs cleanly and shows what the platform can do. You will also install and qualify instruments, train customer users, and write the customer-facing materials, procedures and workflows the field relies on. This is a hands-on, senior individual-contributor role for someone who has done this work before in bioprocess, with room to help build out field applications as the team grows.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Evaluations & Demonstrations

  • Plan, run and report customer evaluations, demonstrations and on-site experiments, from protocol design through results readout.
  • Prepare for field visits in the Billerica lab: run test workflows, verify methods, and confirm systems are ready before they go to a customer.
  • Analyze customer sample data and present results that demonstrate value for each customer's process.
  • Partner with sales and marketing on opportunity strategy, evaluation scope and success criteria.

Customer-Facing Materials & Workflows

  • Author application notes, procedures, workflows and training materials for customers and the field team.
  • Feed field learnings back into product, documentation and process improvements.

Installation, Qualification & Support

  • Install Atlas / Talos / RT systems and execute IQ/OQ/PQ protocols with defined acceptance criteria; record results and deviations and obtain customer sign-off.
  • Support pre-shipment qualification so units are demonstrably fit for use before they ship.
  • Deliver operator training and serve as an escalation and troubleshooting resource for field issues, coordinating with engineering and software.
  • Work within Nirrin's ISO 9001 quality system, keeping evaluation and qualification records controlled and traceable.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Bioengineering or a related field. A PhD is not required; we weight hands-on experience over degree.
  • 5+ years in bioprocess, including direct experience as a field application scientist or in a comparable customer-facing applications role at an instrument or bioprocess technology company.
  • Proven track record running customer demonstrations and evaluations in the field.
  • Hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation (spectroscopy such as NIR or UV, chromatography, or related process analytical tools) and strong wet-lab technique.
  • Experience writing customer-facing technical materials, procedures and workflows.
  • Self-starter who works independently at customer sites and represents Nirrin credibly with scientific and manufacturing users.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites, up to 50%.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting in-line or at-line process analytical technology (PAT) instruments in downstream bioprocessing.
  • Familiarity with GMP, validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) and ISO 9001 environments.
  • Interest in helping build and grow a field applications team.

What Success Looks Like

  • Customer evaluations run cleanly and convert into orders.
  • Customers and the field team have clear, accurate materials and workflows to work from.
  • Instruments are installed and qualified on schedule, with clean records and satisfied customers.

Base salary range: $110,000–$140,000, depending on experience.
