Liquid Instruments - Associate Product Marketing Engineer, Optics & Photonics

San Diego, CA
Full Time
Entry Level
Liquid Instruments builds test and measurement tools for engineers and scientists who need precise, flexible instruments. Our founders are scientists from the Australian National University and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Our work in high-speed digital signal processing and ultra-sensitive instruments began with technology built to measure gravitational waves.

Our main product line, Moku, is a reconfigurable and reprogrammable, FPGA-based test and measurement platform. It handles both simple measurements and complex setups that use many instruments at once, and it is fast and straightforward to customize. Moku pairs capable hardware with easy-to-use software to balance flexibility, performance, and cost.

Liquid Instruments is headquartered in Canberra, Australia, with a U.S. office in Del Mar (San Diego), California. Optics and photonics is our established market. Moku is already in daily use in labs and research groups across the field. It combines the instruments these labs depend on into a single software-defined unit: lock-in amplifiers, PID and laser lock controllers, phasemeters, and waveform generators.

We're hiring an Associate Product Marketing Engineer to own our presence in this market. You'll create the technical content, demos, and sales tools that make Moku the clear choice for photonics work.

This is an early-career role with real ownership. You'll know our photonics customers better than anyone else in the company. The role reports to the VP of Marketing. San Diego preferred; U.S. remote considered.

Your work will include

Product messaging. You'll own product-level messaging for the Moku products that serve photonics, built on our existing company and vertical messaging framework.

Technical proof. You'll write the application notes, benchmark data, and technical webinars that show how Liquid Instruments solutions perform in real photonics work.

Launch content. You'll create the technical content and enablement materials for new products that serve photonics.

Sales enablement. You'll build demos, competitive battlecards, and training content for our Sales team, application engineers, and channel partners, drawing on competitive analysis you develop with Product Management. The goal is for them to run a photonics conversation without you in the room.

Voice of the customer. You'll record and organize what you learn from photonics customers and share it with Product Management and R&D.

Technical presence. You'll work with photonics customers in their labs to run measurements, give demos, and lead technical sessions. You'll represent Liquid Instruments at key events. Expect about 10–20% travel.

You'll work closely with the Content, Field Marketing, and Design teams. They own the blog calendar, social channels, website production, and event logistics.

What success looks like

Within the first 6–12 months:

  • You can explain, without notes, how photonics customers work, where they get stuck, what else they could buy, and why Moku is different
  • You've published at least four application notes, case studies, or benchmark studies. Sales cites them, and prospects find them on their own
  • Sales teams run your demos and use your battlecards without you on the call
  • You give Product and R&D organized customer evidence on a regular schedule
  • You've created the technical content for at least one product launch
  • You're the person inside Liquid Instruments people go to with a photonics question

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Optics, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 2+ years of professional experience in engineering, applications engineering, application science, technical marketing, or another customer-facing technical role. We'll also consider recent PhDs with substantial hands-on lab experience in photonics.
  • Hands-on familiarity with test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, lock-in amplifiers, and waveform generators
  • Working knowledge of optics and photonics applications and the instruments they use
  • Strong technical writing ability, with published work or writing samples to share
  • Able to manage several priorities at once on a fast-moving team
  • Travel for industry events and customer engagements (10–20%)
Base compensation: $95,000 - $115,000, depending on experience.
